2 Killed As Youths Protest Festival Cancellation In Ekiti State

No fewer than two people were killed yesterday in the crisis that
greeted the cancellation of this year’s edition Ogun Onire festival in
Ire Ekiti, Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti state.

A vehicle belonging to the monarch of the town, Oba Victor Bobade, was
said to have been set ablaze by some irate youths.

It was gathered that Oba Bobade counselled Ogun adherents to shelve
this year’s celebration in line with the COVID-19 precautionary
directive by the state government but did not go down well with the
people who allegedly rejected the order.

Governor Kayode Fayemi had directed that the celebration of all
traditional festivals across the state be stopped as part of measures
to halt the spread of Coronavirus in the state.

The development, which polarised the community, it was learnt started
on Sunday and escalated on Monday, with rival groups attacking one
another, prompting the Police Commissioner, Mr. Tunde Mobayo, to
swiftly drafted policemen to the beleaguered town.

The victims were allegedly hit by stray bullets fired while the raging
crisis that paralysed activities in the community was on.

Relatives of victims, according to a source, have continued to protest
the killing of their loved ones.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sunday Abutu, said two persons were killed during the bloody crisis.
