Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was the formidable politician poised to take over the presidential baton from Muhammadu Buhari in 2023. The former Lagos governor has built a political empire that is the envy of his competitors. Beyond being a former governor of Lagos state, Tinubu since then has grown to be a kingmaker. From Lagos to Osun, from Ogun to Ekiti, the Jagaban as he is sometimes called, has become one of the most influential politicians in the country.
Although Tinubu has not made any declaration about contesting for presidency in 2023, he has not denied it either. This has led many political observers and commentators to predict that he would contest for the highest political seat in the country.
Not many politicians have the political acumen of Tinubu as seen from the fact that while his colleagues were battling for seats in the Senate, he was slowly expanding his tentacles to other states. Thus, it is no surprise that he is being singled out as one of the favourites to win the 2023 presidential election.
The EndSars protest that occurred in late 2020 has however cast a huge shadow on the personality of Tinubu. During the protest he inadvertently became one of the symbols of political oppression. Many claimed he owned the toll gate or receives commission from it and the Lekki Toll gate soon became the location for the protest. After alleged shooting by the army at protesters, angry youths set fire to the toll gate.
There were also initial report that Tinubu was harassed by angry Nigerians in France but this was proven later to be false. What cannot be denied however is the damage the Tinubu brand has suffered as a result of the protest. It is yet to be seen how well it recover in time for the 2023 general elections.
