The Anambra State Government has issued a flood warning to residents of flood-prone areas, citing rising water levels of the River Niger.
In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information, Paul Nwosu, on August 24, 2024, the government advised communities in Anambra East, Anambra West, Onitsha North, Onitsha South, Awka North, Ihiala, and Ogbaru Local Government Areas to be alert and prepared for potential flooding.
According to the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), floodwaters from countries in the River Niger system, including Niger Republic and Mali, are moving towards Nigeria, starting with Kebbi State.
While dam operators at Kainji and Jebba are on standby, the agency noted that the risk of flooding is expected to peak by the end of August and into September.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
