The Nigerian Labour Congress under the leadership of Adams Oshiomole provided effective opposition to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) under former President, Olusegun Obasanjo.
The NLC under Comrade Oshiomole fought against arbitrary increases in fuel pump prices, and also fought for the worker’s welfare. From 1999 – 2007, he successful secured significant salary increases for the Nigerian workers during the tenure of former President, Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo.
We could say that the NLC was very popular, effective, prestigious and influential under his reign. Adams was a leader who fosters respect and willing to give his all for the Nigerian workers.
Adams Oshiomole was known for his aggressiveness, courage, tenacity, commitment, zealous and devoted when it comes to issues affecting the workers.
Sadly, the Nigerian Labour Congress today has become a shadow of its former self. The Congress seems to have lost its vision, focus, direction, sense of duty and commitment to the Nigerian workers and could not keep up with pace and records of the NLC under former leader Adams Oshiomole.
The present day NLC under Comrade Ayuba Wabba seems to have lost its prestige and influence, the Union has proven to be a group that no longer fights against oppression or care about the welfare of the Nigerian workers.
The Labour failed to secure a reduction in fuel pump price from N87 per litre to N175, and also failed to better the standard of living of the Nigerian workers, in areas such as casualization of workers and implementation of minimum wage.
The power and influence of the NLC under Comrade Ayuba Wabba, to fight for the worker’s as well as being the “voice of the voiceless” seems to have reduced to its minimum level.
The price of premium motor spirit (PMS) has been increased on multiple occasions, yet no single protest or mass action nationwide from the union which is against the backdrop of the NLC leadership.
The Nigeria populace no longer see the labour congress as a defensive wall against political oppression and injustice as it was few years ago.
Although quite a number of Nigerians has expressed their dissatisfaction on the silence of the Nigerian Labour Congress leader, Ayuba Wabba over the incessant increase of fuel pump price.
Few days ago, An Activist named Deji Adeyanju describes the Labour Union Leader as the most useless in the history of Nigeria, due to his failure to lead an industrial action against high oil prices in the country.
The Nigerian Labour Congress under Comrade Ayuba Wabba need to wake up from its slumber and do everything within its power to regain its influence, and also work for the welfare of the Nigerian workers.
