The November 6 Governorship election in Anambra State is fast approaching. While the parties are oiling their campaign structures for heightened activities, all eyes are on the three major political parties, PDP, APC, and APGA as they prepare for the primary elections which must be concluded in four months but at the end of the day, the surprises that will rock the Anambra 2021election will come from unexpected angles.
Senator Uche Ekwunife
It could be recalled that since 2010, the Anambra Governorship election has remained a straight battle between PDP, APGA, and APC(ACN). No other party has ever been close to competing with these three established parties but 2021 might be different. Firstly, the three parties have failed Nigerians at various times and various levels. The majority of Anambrarians are tired of the BIG THREE and are anxiously waiting for other viable alternatives.
Dr. Chris Ngige
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which produced perhaps the worst Governor in the entire history of Anambra State, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, has a record of endemic corruption both at the state and federal levels leading to the failure of the party to retain the Governorship of the State in 2003 and again the presidency in 2015. Before then, the party in Anambra State was enmeshed in an endless internal crisis that has severally been linked to curses poured on it by people they offended in the past. It is a well-known fact that the party deceived so many aspirants in the past, stripped them of a large chunk of funds, and at the end awarded party tickets to cronies without holding democratic primary elections. Many believe that without forgiveness from these aspirants, PDP will remain a lame duck in the Anambra State Governorship election. Prof. Charles Soludo, Comrade Tony Nwoye, and Chief Oseloka Obaze have at various times fallen victims to the curse.
For the APC, the quest for any electoral trophy in Anambra State is dead on arrival. The woes of the party come from its National outlook and image which clearly is anti-Igbo. A typical Anambra man believes in Political inclusion, equity, and equality. APC as a party apparently doesn’t believe in all that. In fact, the APC, more than any other party since Independence has promoted tribalism and nepotism to the forefront of national politics. Incidentally, the Igbos have been on the receiving end. Unfortunately for the party, Anambra people are typically Igbos and don’t accept any group that treats them with contempt and disdain. It is therefore not surprising that APC is commonly referred to as Boko Haram party in Anambra State. In fact, if care is not taken, any aspirant that identifies with APC will in the future be blacklisted in the state.
Prof. Chukwumma Soludo
On its part, APGA has been a bastion of hope for the people of the state since the failure of the Mbadinuju regime but recent happenings in the state since the tenure of Governor Willie Obiano have put a question mark on the ability of the party to survive the November 6 Governorship election. If not for the support of the Catholic Bishops, being the majority shareholders of the party, perhaps APGA by now maybe lying deep in a grave somewhere in Aguleri. The Crux of the matter remains a lack of internal democracy and also the Agulerization of the party since Obiano mounted the saddle.
Take, for instance, the Governorship ticket of the party is generally assumed to have been awarded to a preferred candidate by the Aguleri cabal many months before the primary election. It is also a well-known fact that every major candidate of the party in any election must pass an interview with the Catholic Bishops of Anambra State. With the foregoing, the Obiano regime may be the last APGA Government in Anambra State going by the mood of the state unless the party conducts a free, fair, and transparent primary election in June.
Senator Ifeanyi Ubah
In the end, the surprise of the 2021 Anambra State Governorship election will come from Young Progressive Party (YPP) and the rejuvenated Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The YPP with a financial war chest powered by the Anambra Progressives may be the joker in the pack. The leader of the party, Senator Ifeanyi Uba has never hidden his desire to occupy the Agu-Awka Government House. He is not only determined but also fired up to go into the November 6 contest with the last drop of his blood. He is not new to the game and with numerous socio-cultural organizations across the state, like AFAIGBOBUOFU, 2021 may be his year.
