In an emergency seating of Anambra State House of Assembly,Hon.Edward Obiefuna Ibuzo,Member Representing Onitsha North 2 Constituency moved a motion calling on the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly,Rt.Hon. Uche Victor Okafor for as a matter of urgency constitute a committee that would interface with the one already set by the Governor Willie Obiano with a view of curbing future occurrence of fire outbreak in the Commercial City of Onitsha Metropolis. Hon. Edward Ibuzo described the Onitsha inferno as an accident and shouldn’t be linked with political terminologies and assured victims of justice to back the state government’s measures to forestall further occurrence of such ugly event in the state.
Seconding the motion,Deputy Chief Whip Anambra State House of Assembly and member representing Onitsha South 2 Constituency Hon.Beverly Ikpeazu Nkemdichie whose immediate Constituency was affected got affected by the unfortunate inferno stated how broken she was seeing lives and properties lost to the inferno.
The motion of urgent importance however raised enormous emphatic concerns in the plenary.
In their respective submissions, Hon. Emeka Aforka, representing Orumba North State Constituency,Hon.Barrister Uzoma Eli, Onitsha South I Constituency,Hon. Chidi Livinus Ihiala 1 Constituency, Hon. Barr. Chuka Ezenwunne Idemili South Constituency. Hon. Pete Ibida, Njikoka II State Constituency,Hon. Lawrence Ezeudu, Dunukofia Constituency,Hon. Timothy Ifedioranma, Njikoka I Constituency among others who spoke passionately on the motion.
Ruling the motion, The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly,Rt. Hon. Uche Victor Okafor passionately condemned the incident and pleaded with Ndị Anambra to support the committee to ensure lasting solution to such incident and pleaded with those affected to come forward as government plans to cushion the effects of the unfortunate inferno as soon as possible for them.
The Speaker on behalf of Anambra State House of Assembly members commeseraters with victims of the inferno and commended Governor Willie Obiano for his apt response to assist victims, according to the Speaker, “Preliminary investigation posits that the cause of the inferno was an accident of a fully loaded petrol tanker and described it as an unfortunate incident that should be devoid politics but calls for sober reflection and how to find a lasting solution to such incident.
He further sympathized with the immediate and extended family of the woman and child who died in the accident as well as other victims and prayed God to grant the government wisdom to find permanent solution to situations like this and as well, give other victims the grace and enablement to recover the set back.
Resolutions of the plenary posits that;
- Anambra State House of Assembly commeserates with victims of the Onitsha inferno.
- Sets up committee to investigate causes of the inferno and make recommendations on ways of ensuring that there no further occurrence.
Recall earlier in the day before the Assembly plenary, Deputy Chief Whip Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon Mrs Beverly Ikpeazu Nkemdichie Joined Gov Willie Obiano Anambra State Governor to visit the Upper iweka axis where the unfortunate inferno yesterday happened and other parts affected too.
