APC tackles PDP over call for inquest on NPA

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday took a swipe at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), saying the opposition party was in no position to preach to the governing party about the ongoing fight against corruption.

Secretary of APC Caretaker /Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) Senator John James Akpanudoedehe stated this in Abuja, while reacting to PDP tirade on the on-going probe at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

He said the opposition lacked moral right to condemned President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption efforts.

The PDP had on Monday demanded the immediate sack, investigation and prosecution of Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and the suspended NPA Managing Director, Hadiza Bala Usman, over exposed looting of over N165 billions in the agency.

The party also asked the Transport Minister to come clean on his reported connection in the alleged involvement of his wife, Mrs. Edith Amaechi, in the exposed N48 billion contract scam rocking the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The opposition party said allegation of corruption coming out of NPA, NDDC and other agencies of government in the last six years showed that the MDAs have become the cash cows and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) of greedy APC leaders and their cronies in government.

APC, however, said unlike the corruption-ridden era of the PDP, the approval of NPA probe by President Buhari was a clear testimony of the APC-led administration’s belief in transparency, good governance and adherence to the rules in public service.

Akpanudoedehe noted that the President’s action further reinforced the administration’s zero tolerance for corruption.

The party also faulted what it described as a shameful attempt by the PDP to libelously drag the spouse of Amaechi, who the party claimed, has never held public office and not a politician, into the realm of politics, by maligning her with a fictional tale of looting the NDDC.

Berating PDP, the ruling party scribe maintained that the opposition “is still living in their alternate reality in which corruption, aided by their family members and cronies was approved statecraft.”

Explaining that the NPA inquest was a routine administrative probe, APC expressed that it was not surprising that “for the PDP that looted everything in sight during the 16 years it held this country to ransom, it is understandable that it is still unable to understand a routine administrative probe”.

The party noted that the transportation minister categorically stated that no one has been indicted of anything while inaugurating the NPA probe panel on Monday, but maintained that the probe was in line with the routine discharge of the duties and functions of the Ministry of Transportation’s supervisory mandate over NPA.

“The fact that the APC-led government of President Buhari approved the probe of the NPA is a clear testimony of the President’s belief in transparency, good governance and adherence to the rules in public service. It further reinforces President Buhari’s zero tolerance for corruption in his administration.

“Compare and contrast this with the years of PDP and all anyone would find are 16 years of plundering of our collective wealth, the desecration of our public institutions and their values. No public institution was spared,” the senator said.
