Earlier today, Gov. Willie Obiano visited the gutter where the tanker loaded with petroleum product had crashed at Upper Iweka, along Enugu-Onitsha expressway. However, flanking the governor to the left and to the right were heavily armed security personnel.
Residents and victims of the very avoidable and unfortunate incident wondered why the governor was speaking to newsmen after visiting the gutter instead of visiting the markets torched by the fire to commiserate with those who had lost property and lives.
Reactions have continued to trail the governor’s latest action. A majority of commentators lament that the governor had to avoid the actual markets affected by the fire outbreak.
Recall that yesterday, the state government through the office of the Commissioner for Information released information asking the victims to come to Ekwueme Square for compensation. But while speaking to newsmen today, the governor said that the victims would be compensated before Christmas. A lot of analysts perceive obvious doublespeak and insensitivity of the government to the plight of the suffering victims.
Meanwhile, we call upon well-meaning individuals, corporate bodies and philanthropists to come to the aid of the victims at this critical moment.
