Could All Those Igbo Leaders Buhari Met In Owerri Be Wrong With Their Support For Uzodimma?

By Ogu Bundu Nwadike, M.A

The Bible says that by the witness of two persons a matter is judged. Our Lord Jesus Christ sent out his disciples in twos as witnesses to their respective ministries and missions. And Ndigbo say: “The snake seen by one person may be a stick”!

One of the most important aspects of the presidential visit to Imo State on Thursday, September 9, 2021 by President Muhammadu Buhari was the successful assemblage by Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, the Executive Governor of Imo State, of the creme de la creme of the leadership corpus of the Southeast geo-political zone in a Town Hall meeting with the president.

We’re talking about the roll call of such Eastern leadership ensemble which saw sitting confidently the following men of timbre and caterpillar as:

  1. The President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Prof George Obiozor.
  2. The former Chief of General Staff, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe (Rtd).
  3. The former Senate President, Distinguished Senator Ken Nnamani.
  4. The former Military Governor in old Imo State, Senator Ike Nwachukwu.
  5. The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe.
  6. The Chairman of the South East Governors Forum and Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Dave Umahi.
  7. The Deputy Governor of Abia State, who represented the governor.
  8. Deputy Governor of Anambra State, who represented the Governor.
  9. Secretary to State Government of Enugu State, who represented the Governor.
  10. The Anglican Archbishop of Owerri Province, Most Rev. David Onouha.
  11. Archbishop of Enugu, Emmanuel Chukwuma.
  12. Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, (Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo).
  13. Others quite numerous to be listed here.

Now, it’s the view of serious socio-political pundits that for these great leaders to agree and accept the invitation by Governor Uzodimma, they expressed vote of confidence and support for him and accorded him well-deserved support.

The question then is “can all of those reputable leaders be wrong with their vote of confidence and show of solidarity and support for President Buhari and Governor Uzodimma?”

If those tested and proven national leaders, wise and prides of the East, are disregarded as being wrong, then who else can be right?

” God Almighty is not the author of confusion”! So says the Good Book. He it was who also said: “I will show mercy and compassion to whomever I wish”! God’s case, no appeal! There’s no use crying over spilled milk!

Agreed, “Igbo enweghi eze”! But the fly that lacks counsellors or rejects wise counsel, ends up buried with the corpse! Ndigbo need their duly constituted leaders. Every leader must have a leader. All leaders must be followers. Who say men no dey!

As a matter of truth, the truth of the matter is that the men that gathered in Owerri for Buhari and Uzodimma, are the people through whose eyes, Nigeria and the world look at Ndigbo worldwide. They’re the voices and ears from which Nigeria and the rest of the world hear and listen to the East.

It’s really a mark of gross disregard and disrespect for any Igbo man or woman, youth or child to say or do anything untoward against them. Ndigbo say: “He that respects an elder, longevity will later be his or her portion”!

Well-meaning citizens defer to their leaders with due recognition, regard and respect accorded them by all and sundry.

The other stakeholding ethnic nationalities in the Nigerian state accord recognition, regard, respect and reverence to their elders and leaders. Ndigbo must learn to emulate such good character and conduct.

Fortunately, President Buhari was overtly very happy and quite excited to see and meet with those leaders of Ndigbo, most of whom have been his personal friends and associates of many years and still counting. Why is anybody unhappy about that?

What would have anybody or group benefitted had the heavyweight leaders jettisoned the Town Hall meeting? No normal hen orchestrates and perpetrates treachery against her own eggs! No normal person will cut his/her nose to spite his/her face!

We should thankfully commend those great leaders that made out time from their very busy schedules, and in fact, their quite busy rests, to come out to receive and honour the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

God be with all of them and bless them with long life, good health, and sound mind. In Jesus’s name. Amen!

By God’s grace, Imo State must be reconstructed and Nigeria must be taken to the next level!
