Don’t be victim of political jobbers, APC chieftain tells Obaseki

APC chieftain tells Obaseki

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Maj. Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd.) has admonished Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki to be wary of the antics of political jobbers so as not to fall their victim. He told journalists in Abuja yesterday that those fanning the embers of discord between Obaseki and National Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole were doing so for their selfish interests.

Esekhaigbe, who is a member of the South South caucus of the party, noted that it behooves Obaseki to reconcile his differences with Oshiomhole to avoid distractions from implementing his developmental agenda for Edo state. His words: “You cannot rule out differences among party chieftains because crises in itself is an everyday phenomenon, but how you manage crises is what makes the difference.

“What is happening in Edo politics is unfortunate. On May 22, 2019 precisely I wrote an article titled, Godwin Obaseki and the Cocktail of Endorsements.“I argued that those endorsing him were trying to ignite crises. People want to make capital out of nothing. And I advised the Governor to stay focused because his development strategy is good, as he started well and is doing well. So, I felt that he should concentrate on governance and not be distracted by political jobbers.

“Most of the problems we have in politics is that most people have taken it on full time basis, it is a full occupation for them as they have never done anything else in their lives. “So, they see politics as a means to an end. They are the ones igniting these crises and at the end of the day they become beneficiaries of the bad situation.” He also noted that Obaseki was not a politician when he came. But when he came in, first of all the idea was that he should concentrate on governance and allow the politicians to do the politicking.

He, however, maintained that without politicians no one would have a platform as political parties give office holders the platform to control government. “So you cannot relegate that political structure and say you don’t have anything to do with politicians because they were the ones that mobilised the electorate to vote for you.

“So, there is this disconnect between the politicians and those in government. And that is where the unfortunate incident started and some well-meaning individuals have come in to address the issues, but intransigence in some quarters leaves cause for concern.

“When you say the crises between Obaseki and Oshiomhole, I ask is the Oshiomhole contesting as governor again? He has done his eight years. He is the one that fought to liberate Edo State. So it would be a misconception to think that he (Oshiomhole) would want to destroy the house that he built,” he added.
