Enugu 2023: 3 Politicians That May Emerge As The Next Governor Of Enugu State

As the 2023 General Elections draws near, Politicians in Enugu State are already warming up to take over Governance from the incumbent Governor of the State, Rt. Hon. Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi whose tenure ‘ll end on May 29, 2023. All things being equal, Below is the lost of Top 3 Politicians that May Emerge as the Next Governor of Enugu State.

1. Senator Ike Ekweremadu 

Since 1997, Ekweremadu has been serving in different capacities in Government. The 58years-old Lawyer turned Politician came into political limelight 24years ago after his appointment as the Chairman of Aniri Local Government Area of Enugu State, a position he occupied until 1999. He later served as Chief of Staff to Ex-governor Chimaroke Nnamami. (1999 – 2002) and subsequently the Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG). In 2003, He contested and won the Election to represent Enugu West Senatorial District at the Nigerian Senate. The Fifth-term Senator won re-elections in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 under the same PDP platform. Senator Ekweremadu holds the record as the Longest Serving Principal Officer at the National Assembly, He was the Deputy Senate President for a Three Consecutive Terms of 12years (2007 – 2019). If political experience is anything to go by, Ekweremadu is well qualified for the Enugu State 2023 PDP Governorship Ticket.

2. Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi 

The 50years-old Ubosi is a Staunch Loyalist of the incumbent Governor Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. He hails from Umuchigbo, Enugu East Local Government Area of the State. He began his political career in 1999 as a Ward Councillor, a position he held until 2002. Ubosi resurfaced politically in 2009 following his emergence as the Financial Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, he served in that capacity until 2011. Ubosi, a Third-term Lawmaker contested and won a Seat in the Enugu State House of Assembly in 2011 under the PDP platform. Again in 2015, He won a re-election under the same PDP platform and subsequently emerged as Speaker of the House, a position he occupies till date.

3. Senator Gilbert Emeka Nnaji 

Nnaji is an Household Name in the Political Circle of Enugu State. He hails from Amorji-Nike in Enugu East Council. The 55years-old Banker turned Politician has been in Active Politics since 1997 and has served in different capacities for the past 24years. Some of these Positions he has previously occupied include Chairman of Enugu East Local Government Area (1997 – 1999), Member representing Enugu East/Isi-uzo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives (2003 – 2011) and Senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District at the National Assembly (2011 – 2019). Nnaji lost his bid to return to the Senate for a Third-term in 2019 as he was defeated by Ex-governor Chimaroke Nnamami of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
