George Floyd

A George Floyd memorial fund in an ongoing Gofundme campaign had raked in $12.4million by 14:00 GMT on Thursday.

The fundraising was initiated by his brother Philonise Floyd.

George Floyd, an African-American was asphyxiated on 25 May by a white policeman in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The tragedy triggered a national outrage and street marches, with the rallying cry of ‘Black Lives Matter’.

Over 466,000 donors have sent money to the Gofundme account, which had targeted just $1.5million.

And it appears more will still join the fundraising train before Floyd’s burial in Houston, Texas on 9 June.

The outpouring of generosity in memory of Floyd, a former rapper in Houston, was a great irony to his last moments.

Floyd was arrested by the police after he tried to exchange a pack of cigarettes for an alleged fake $20 bill.

Derek Chauvin, one of the policemen who arrested him then chose to kneel on his neck and suffocate him.

” On May 25, 2020, my life shattered as I learned of the tragic passing of my dear brother, George”, wrote Philonise on the GofundMe campaign page.

“My family and I watched in absolute horror as the now infamous and horrifying video began to spread quickly throughout social media.

“What we saw on that tape left us shell shocked; a white Minneapolis police officer kneeling directly on my brother’s neck, obstructing his ability to breathe.

“As some officers knelt on his neck, other officers participated and watched; no one took any action to save my brother’s life.

“Those officers would continue to brutalize my brother until he died.

“This fund is established to cover funeral and burial expenses, mental and grief counselling, lodging and travel for all court proceedings, and to assist our family in the days to come as we continue to seek justice for George.

“A portion of these funds will also go to the Estate of George Floyd for the benefit and care of his children and their educational fund”, Philonise said.

Apart from money rolling into the GoFundme account, at least former boxing champ Floyd Mayweather has also offered to bankroll the funeral expenses of George Floyd.
