Governor Godwin Obaseki has revealed that he plans to probe the administration and activities of the immediate past governor of the State and former national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomole, over allegations of corruption and mismanagement of funds.
The Governor made the revelation while addressing a plea by the National Vice chairman of the PDP in the South-South not to falter in his quest to unravel the corruption allegations, placed on the Oshiomole administration. According to the Governor, while he served as the leader of the Economic Team of Edo State, and was busy rallying and organizing funds from both the World bank and the capital market, some mischievous elements in government were busy mismanaging and embezzling the funds.
According to Obaseki (NOT QUOTED): I was a member of Oshiomole’s government. I believed in the fact that Edo State must be developed. In doing so, I commited a lot of resources and energy for 8 years, going as far as the World bank and the capital market in search of funds for the state. But with the documents I have been presented with, it seems like I may have been foolish. While I was running around, some elements were busy embezzling the funds we were tirelessly working for.
Personally, I do not fancy the idea of a Probe. I like to move on and focus on other things of importance. However, when I go back to look at those documents, and compare the cost of some of the contracts awarded during that time, and now, during my administration, it becomes clearer and more necessary to question some set of persons. I am not a governor that victimizes or oppresses people. However, Edo people must know the true situation of things, and what has happened. For instance, the people must know why a $200 million contract awarded ten years ago, and has been completely paid for, hasn’t been completed yet.
We are clearing the closet, so there would be no problem when someone else comes in. Edo people will no longer be blinded or deceived anymore by anyone.
Obaseki further revealed that most of the contracts awarded by Oshiomole, were re-awarded by his administration to a different set of engineers, for less than one-tenth of the sum appropriated for the projects by Oshiomole.
This is not the first time that the two friends turned enemies are at loggerheads. Remember that in the run up to the last Governorshio election in Edo, Adams Oshiomole, who was then the national chairman of the APC vehemently refused to support Obaseki, the Incumbent governor of the state, who at that time, was still in the APC. This ultimately led to the defection of Obaseki to the opposition People’s Democratic Party, under whose platform he was able to clinch his second term bid, to the utter dismay of Oshiomole, who later saw himself removed from the chairmanship position of the APC.
