Luis Suárez joined Barcelona from Liverpool for a reported fee of £75m.
Since then, Atletico Madrid had failed in their attempts to reclaim their position as the kings of Spain, until Suárez joined them last summer.
And in his first season at the club, Suárez has just delivered the league title for Atletico with the winning goal against Real Valladolid in the final matchday of the campaign.
But Diego Simeone’s side wouldn’t have been able to win the league this term if Barcelona didn’t force Suárez out of the club.
Back in February this year, Suárez said what really bothered him was when Barça said to him that he was too old and could no longer play at the highest possible level, a statement which didn’t go down well with the player.
Well, Suárez has now conquered La Liga once more, this time at Atletico Madrid, with Barcelona watching.
The 34-year old scored his 21st league goal of the season against Osasuna to complete a 2-1 comeback, and after the game, a teary Suárez spoke out against Barcelona and also thanked Atletico for trusting in him.
“Barcelona didn’t value me, they looked down on me and my family suffered”; Suárez said.
“Atletico opened their doors for me, (so) I’ll always be grateful to this club for trusting in me. This title is special. Messi will be happy for me”.
