Police parade kidnap suspects, others

                             

Nine suspects arrested for alleged kidnapping, robbery, cattle rustling and rape were yesterday paraded by the police in Abuja.

The suspects, Abubakar Ado, alias Sumaye, 31; Muhammadu Murtala, 20; Idris Usman, 20; Sani Lawal, 37; Haruna Sani, 47; John Azashachia, 26; Jacob Aondonnes, 30; Tyan Denis, 27 and Sango Vincent, 34, were arrested at locations in Zamfara and Benue states.

Police spokesman Jimoh Moshood, an acting Deputy Commissioner, who paraded the suspects, said they were suspected kidnappers terrorising residents of Zamfara State.

He said Ado confessed to have bought an AK47 rifle for N700,000, which his gang used for kidnapping and cattle rustling.

Moshood said Murtala admitted to have raped three women alongside other gang members, adding that he confessed to have been in possession of two AK47 rifles he allegedly bought from one Alhaji Nashama.

“Usman confessed to be a robber and a cattle rustler for three years. Two hundred cattle were recovered from him. Lawal was arrested with an AK47 rifle,” he said.

Moshood said the other suspects were apprehended while planning to rob a filling station and kidnap people in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, adding that a member of the gang, Sony Jatto, was at large.

He said Azashachia, 26, Aondonnes, 30, Denis, 27, Vincent, 34 and Jatto travelled from Katsina-Ala Local Government to Makurdi to execute their plan, but were arrested in a hotel where they lodged.

The police spokesman said: “The leader of the gang, Azashachia, confessed to have engaged in kidnapping and robbery in recent time. His gang, according to him, was responsible for the kidnap of two women, including the wife of a retired judge. The two women were killed and their bodies dumped in a river after collecting N1.2 million from their families.

“Investigation is on to arrest other members of the gang. The suspects have confessed to the crime. They will be arraigned after completion of investigation.”
