Ebonyi State Governor and Chairman of South-East Governors’ Forum, Dave Umahi, spoke about the security operations between the Nigerian Government and the South-East Governors.
He also gave a brief background of the post-1999 situation in the South-East, from MASSOB to IPOB to ESN. He also spoke about the reason why the regional security outfit Ebube Agu was set set up in the region. He said that the rationale behind the establishment of Ebube Agu was based on the vigilantes South-East has always had, to protect the people.
Governor Umahi also spoke about the activities of the proscribed IPOB in the South-East. He said that a lot of people have been brainwashed about Biafra; that there will be no election in the South-East region in 2023. He said that INEC offices are not being burnt in other parts of the country, and said that it is a terrible mindset for anybody to be doing this. He described the people behind those attacks as criminals.
It should be recalled that on Sunday, the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu State was gutted by fire.
The incident occurred barely one week after another INEC office in Obollo-Afor, Udenu, Enugu, was razed.
Two days ago, the Punch reported that INEC officials had proposed to meet with heads of security agencies as part of the move to address the deliberate attacks on INEC offices in some parts of the country.
Punch had also reported that in the past two years, at least 19 INEC offices have been burnt, and the states that have been affected the most are – Akwa Ibom (4 cases), Abia (3 cases), Anambra (2 cases) and Imo (2 cases).
Although no one has been held responsible for these attacks or prosecuted for the vandalism and arson, Governor said that it is a terrible mindset for anyone to carry out such an act.
He said that a lot of people have been brainwashed about Biafra, to think that there will be no election in the South-East region in 2023.
The activities of the Biafra agitators have been giving a lot of people serious concern, especially in recent times, although the security operatives have carried out several operations to clamp down on several members of the proscribed group. Governor Dave Umahi opined that they are being brainwashed.
