The Senate is not for Storytellers – Says Uche Ekwunife

The Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party for Senate Anambra Central, Senator Uche Ekwunife has described the office of a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a very important office which should not be reserved for Storytellers.

She said this on Senator Uche Ekwunife’s political round table, a political programme on Ogene 98.3 fm.

Reacting to questions, Senator Ekwunife said that the office of a Senator of the federal republic of Nigeria can be a very influential position if given to the right  person.

According to Ekwunife, a lawmaker who must succeed must first understand the workings of the National Assembly. He/she must be able to effectively utilize whatever committee position given to him or her. A representative must be able to attract dividends of democracy to constituents and not tell stories.

“While in the Senate for six months, I achieved great feats inspite of how short my stay there was. One of my first achievements in the Senate was bringing the Senate committee on works to seek solutions for the erosion menace that almost cut off the Nkpor flyover section of Enugu-Onitsha expressway. I sponsored two bills as Senator, one of which has been signed into law. As Senator, I attracted two alphated roads. I was able to achieve these feats within a short time because I understood the working of the National Assembly having spent 8 years at the House of Representatives”, Ekwunife said.

Continuing she said: “As a member of House of Reps, I left a legacy – a legacy of hardwork, a legacy of integrity. Majority of the goodwill I enjoy today is because I delivered for my people – the people of Anaocha, Njikoka, Dunukofia federal constituency.

“Today, Anambra Central has a Senator who has spent one year in the Senate with nothing to show for it. No projects attracted, no meaningful empowerment given, just stories. Our constituency needs a representative that has the capacity, contact and reach to attract meaningful development to our zone. Within six months as Senator, I got employment for 11 persons, I also got employment for someone in Central Bank of Nigeria. You can’t achieve these things by telling stories, all you need is to establish the right contact and have the zeal to meet the yearnings of your constituents”, She said.

Senator Ekwunife noted that since her major opponent has also been tested, what is left is for the people of Anambra Central to compare and contrast her achievement with that of the incumbent Senator who according to her has failed in all facets of representation. She urged them to vote a candidate who has the will and capacity to impact meaningfully on the the Senatorial zone, noting that she remains committed today more than ever to meeting the needs of the majority of ndi Anambra Central.
