On the 29th of September 2020, the International Association of World Peace Advocate (IAWPA) organized the UN-SDGs and Awards Presentation held at the Merit House, Abuja.
The highlight of the event was on the meritorious award of the most friendly SDGs Governor for the year 2020, which was bestowed on the Shared Prosperity Governor, His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership.
The Governor’s emergence for the award was a result of his outstanding performance in the establishment and implementation of peoples oriented projects within the short period of stay in office. These projects instituted by the Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency, the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma address the various constituent’s goals of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
On Zero Hunger, Imolites are known for their hardworking nature and the sufficient food produce out of our farmlands. However, when the pandemic struck, the economy shrunk and globally it paved way for hunger but the Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency, the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma has on several occasion made available palliatives and incentives of food items across the 27LGA of the state. This gesture offered the people sustenance from hunger and ensured no record of social vices such as theft, etc.
On Good Health and Well-Being, the Shared Prosperity Governor, recently commissioned and deployed Mobile Clinics into the rural areas to cater for the health needs of the citizens, at no cost. This was after a thorough review of the existing health facilities at various LGAs which would require ample time to fix. However, the Governor thought it wise to make shift by providing the Mobile Clinics to serve the people pending the completion of the rehabilitation and revitalization of these hospitals. Recall that, during the outbreak of the global pandemic, the COVID-19, His Excellency inaugurated a committee comprising eminent technocrats within the health system. This committee spearheaded the provision, monitoring, control and implementation of the COVID-19 protocol compliance which ensured the limited number of recorded cases in the state. Working in synergy with the NCDC, a testing laboratory was set up in Owerri to improve on number of tests. Six isolation centers were built and equipped to manage recorded case and these yielded magnificent result in the control of spread of the COVID-19, also 30 emergency Covid-19 Ambulances were procure and deployed to various LGAs to manage the covid-19 cases. The ministry of health alongside the covid-19 taskforce committee has also embarked on community covid-19 testing in recent time.
On Quality Education, the Shared Prosperity Governor met an education system which was devoid of appropriate legislation and as such, lacked coordination and direction. A striking disposition which has been alien to the political system in Nigeria was exercised by the Governor when he granted the existing committee on Education a clean bill of continuity. From the reports submitted by the committee, a rejig and overhaul was carried out on the Imo State University to get it back on track as a reputable citadel of learning. The Governor appropriated the legislation establishing the University of Agriculture and Environmental Studies, Umuagwo and the license was granted by the National University Commission (NUC). This progress propelled the relocation of the Imo State Polytechnic and the decentralization of the Campus, thereby taking the educational institutions closer to the people. Recently, His Excellency commissioned the Digital Library at Oru East to serve our teaming youths in school.
On Gender Equality, the Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma has engaged a larger number of women on duties more than ever witnessed in the history of Imo State. The Governor recognizes the impact and contributions of women in our society and has always ensured their incorporation at various levels of governance.
On Clean Water and Sanitation, the 17th of June 2020 witnessed the State Government signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with USAID for the Implementation of the EWASH project in Imo State. More so, on the 6th of September 2020, the Government signed a letter of expression of interest to participate in the World Bank – funded Sustainable National Water Supply and Sanitation project. This is in addition to the ongoing World bank assisted 3rd National Urban Water Sector Reform Project which the State have paid N61Million counterpart contribution fund. It is in order to maximize the benefits of these donor efforts as a transformational tool to the government, that the Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation was relocated to this permanent site. To further reposition Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation for optimal performance by undertaking to implement the Water Law and EWASH Policy, the Shared Prosperity Governor has established a synergy with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources Abuja.
On Affordable and Clean Energy, since the creation of Imo state in 1973, the power supply delivery was dependent on a single 132KV line from Ala-Oji in Abia State to Egbu Owerri transmission station. This 132kv station through 33kv lines transverses from Owerri via Nwaorieubi, Mgbidi, Omuma, Amaifeke and the whole of ideato nation. While on the other side of the same station through 33kv line takes off from the same Egbu to the entire Owerri and Okigwe zone thereby making power supply availability in the whole state epileptic and grossly inadequate. The Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma has activated work on the 330KV double circuit line from Alaoji to Owerri which is now ongoing. Also another 330kv line is coming from Onitsha through Ihiala to Owerri while 132kv line takes off from Ihiala to Orlu. The contractor on 132kv line from Mbalano to Okigwe and Ideato has already mobilized to site.
On Decent Work and Economic Growth, the Shared Prosperity Governor recognizes the impact of workforce and this was why, upon resumption of duty, he paid an unscheduled visit to the state secretariat to ascertain working conditions. From observations, he swung into action by renovating the secretariat, restored water supply to the secretariat and refurbished the power generators to serve the secretariat. His Excellency as well recognized the need to accord appropriate attention to the welfare and remuneration of the civil servants. To this end, automation of the payroll system was introduced, even though the migration created a delay in salary payment, it helped rid the system off the fraud bedeviling it and thereby saving funds for the state. His Excellency further procured and handed over Staff Bus to the civil servants to ease their transportation to and fro work. The Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma has implemented policies geared towards improving on the economic activities of the state. The rehabilitation of moribund state enterprises such as Adapalm, the Statesman Newspaper, the Avutu Poultry Farm, etc. There is also a rejuvenation of the market and commerce institutions in the state by the appointment of officials of Government for liaising with these organs.
On Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, the Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma lunched the revolution of improvement in these sector by slashing the cost of Right of Way for telecommunications and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to lay fiber cables from N4,500 to N145. This was a manifestation of the government’s determination to spur the telecommunication companies to further invest in broadband infrastructure and trigger ancillary on-line services, especially in the field of education. In the penultimate month, the Minister of Information paid a working visit at the Modular Refinery undergoing construction within the state. Upon completion, the refinery would be producing 30,000 bpd of crude products. This would not only improve the availability of crude products within the country, the ripple effects it would have on the states economy and job opportunities are numerous. The Shared Prosperity Governor attracted the Digital Emergency Center established in Owerri by the Federal Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy in conjunction with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
On Responsible Consumption and Production, the Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma has carried out several awareness programs towards educating the people on hygienic consumption to ensure the market and homes are made free from substandard products.
On Peace and Justice Strong Institutions, the Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma has implemented policies and projects that would see the justice administration in the state seamlessly. The good working condition of the judges have been provided by the Governor, including but not limited to their entitlements. The crown of it so far, is the Governor’s assent to the Imo State Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2020. This is to serve for an enhanced and efficient justice system in Nigeria, which would be in conformity with international best practice. The Administration of Criminal Justice Act seeks to introduce quick dispensation of justice and a better administration of justice system in Nigeria; one of which is the change of call sign from “the accused” to “the defendant”. The expunging of torture by the police in effort to extract confession statement. In the same vein, practice and procedures in criminal proceedings were fashioned out to ensure that justice, which is the overall task of a legal system, is achieved.
On Partnership to achieve the Goal, the Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency the Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma has assured of his commitment to the values and mission of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by improving and impacting positively in the lives of the less privileged and the vulnerable groups in Imo State. This is evident in the numerous Memorandum of Understanding signed with the agencies of United Nations for project execution, etc.
From the foregoing, it is without doubt, that the Shared Prosperity Governor has greatly, within the short period in office, positively affected the life of Imolites in line with international expectations
