Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and activist Gani Adams have warned that Nigeria risks having only one presidential candidate in the 2027 election if current trends continue.

The duo raised concerns over judicial interference in political party affairs, saying conflicting court rulings are being used to destabilise opposition parties.

Falana cautioned that such actions could lead to a situation where only one political party fields a candidate, questioning the need for an election under such circumstances.

Similarly, Adams warned that Nigeria is gradually drifting toward a one-party system, alleging that the judiciary is being used to suppress the will of the people.

Both speakers made the remarks at a memorial lecture in Lagos, where they urged Nigerians and civil society groups to defend democracy and resist any attempt to undermine electoral choice.

The warning comes amid growing political tensions and legal disputes within parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
