The speculated 2027 presidential ambition of former President Goodluck Jonathan has sparked division within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-South.

While some party stakeholders see his return as a “breath of fresh air,” others argue he has done his time and should not contest against President Bola Tinubu.

In Bayelsa, Jonathan’s home state, Governor Douye Diri is yet to make a public statement, while Rivers PDP is sharply split between the Wike and Fubara camps. Edo and Delta PDP leaders openly welcome his candidacy, describing Jonathan as one of Nigeria’s most qualified leaders, whereas Akwa Ibom PDP is waiting for his formal declaration.

Nationally, PDP heavyweights such as Sule Lamido, Jerry Gana, and Governor Bala Mohammed have urged him to rejoin the party and run. However, legal debates linger over his eligibility, despite a 2022 court ruling affirming his right to contest.

The Ijaw Youths Council and PANDEF say they would support a Southern presidency in 2027 but remain cautious, stressing fairness, equity, and regional interest above individual ambition.

For now, Jonathan remains silent, with aides hinting he is still consulting.
