A catastrophic accident on the Zaria-Kano Expressway has claimed the lives of at least 21 people, after a Hummer bus collided head-on with a trailer, setting both vehicles ablaze and leaving no survivors on the bus.
Sources say the tragedy unfolded when the Hummer bus, reportedly speeding, attempted a dangerous overtake and rammed directly into an oncoming trailer. The resulting explosion was immediate and engulfed both vehicles in flames, trapping passengers inside the bus with no chance of escape.
All occupants of the Hummer bus were burnt beyond recognition. The inferno was so intense that neither emergency responders nor passersby could intervene effectively to save any lives.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the incident, calling it one of the deadliest crashes on that stretch of highway in recent times. Recovery operations were jointly conducted by the FRSC, security personnel, and civilian volunteers. The charred remains of the victims have been evacuated to a nearby hospital morgue.
A senior FRSC official, who declined to be named, urged motorists to respect speed limits, avoid reckless overtaking, and ensure vehicle roadworthiness especially on notoriously dangerous highways like the Zaria-Kano route.
