300 Families Rendered Homeless by Flood in Mgbakwu, Awka North

People of Mgbakwu, Awka North Council Area have sent a save our soul message to government at all levels to save them from the devastating effects of flooding wrecking havoc in their community.

The flood water which they said normally comes with high velocity whenever it rains from within Amede, Amakeze, Otulu na Onaga villages in the community gets to Njikoka-Amankpu village to Eke-Agba Isuanaocha where it has damaged many houses, displaced about 300 families and their house holds and taken over 3.2kilometers of land.

Addressing the ABS crew after inspecting the level of damage the flood has caused, the Commissioner For Environment, Sir Felix Odumegwu expressed
dismay over the incident stating that it was due to lack of drainage and water channels caused by lack of planning.

The Commissioner who spoke through one of his aid, Mr Emmanuel John- Bosco, maintained that another issue they are facing is that all flood water collect in their area because it is a sloppy area, saying that it has caused serious mayhem and so many agricultural activities affected and promised to send the message to Governor Chukwuma Soludo whom he believes will do justice to it.

The President General Of Mgbakwu Community, Honourable Basil Nwokeoma-Chukwu, disclosed that they have experienced such for the past ten years, and have tried all they could to stop the flooding but it kept escalating, thereby causing more harm saying that it has rendered many homeless as it is about taking the whole Amankpu village.

In their separate speeches, two indegenes who were rendered homeless, Mr Chris Igboamalu and Chairman, Amankpu Progressive Union, Mr Obiadinma Nnebeive, lamented their ordeal whenever it rains until they were rendered homeless calling on Anambra State government and those representing them at national level to come to their rescue as they have suffered untold hardship because of the situation .
