35 Million Nigerians At Risk Of Hunger In 2026 — UN

United Nations

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that nearly 35 million Nigerians could face acute food insecurity during the 2026 lean season, according to Nigeria’s 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP).

OCHA disclosed that 5.8 million of those at risk are in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY) States, where humanitarian needs continue to rise due to a 16-year conflict, displacement, limited access to basic services, climate shocks, and economic hardship.

The UN also projected that about three million children under five may suffer from severe acute malnutrition in 2026, including one million children in the BAY States. Overall, women and children make up 80 per cent of people in urgent need.
