Barely weeks after three senators-elect endorsed their candidature for Senate presidency and House of Representatives speakership, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State has thrown its weight behind Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila for the two positions.
State party chairman, Jibrin Imam, in a press statement, said the endorsement was a follow up to a meeting by the party stakeholders comprising governors and APC state chairmen from the North-Central states, which took place in Abuja last Thursday.
Imam said the position of party at the state level was to allow for a smooth sail for the APC-led administration and as well to show their support and loyalty, adding that, “we endorsed Lawan and Gbajabiamila in order to avert the reoccurrence of what happened in the 8th Assembly.”
Describing as very unpalatable what happened in the outgoing Senate and House of Representatives leadership, Imam said the experience slowed down “our progress in the last four years.
“We are loyal party members and have resolved to tow the position of the party at the national level by endorsing Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan as the Senate President of the 9th Assembly and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as the Speaker House of Representatives.”
“Our experience in almost four years now in the 8th Assembly is not palatable at all because it slowed down our progress in terms of government workings and we don’t want a repeat of that.”
In a related development, a House of Representatives member-elect, Abdullahi Mahmud, representing Agaie/Lapai Federal Constituency, has called on those aggrieved by the choice of Lawan and Gbajabiamila as Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker to respect the party’s supremacy on the issue.
Mahmud, in an interview, said all members-elect form Niger State and in the entire North Central resolved to support the two candidates as endorsed by the APC at the national level and would do everything to ensure the party supremacy prevails.
He pointed out that, “It is not just all the National Assembly members-elect but the entire APC from all the states that make up the North-Central states because we want the party to succeed in actualizing the Next level agenda.”
