The Federal Government has made a significant move to boost teacher education in Nigeria by granting Federal Colleges of Education (FCOEs) the authority to offer the National Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor’s Degrees in Education.

This approval follows a revised Act that governs the FCOEs, which was signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, during a meeting with staff unions and management of the FCOEs.

The meeting focused on implementing the Dual Mandate and shaping the future of teacher training in the country.

Alausa stated that improving the public view of teaching as a profession is crucial and called for stronger collaboration and respect between teachers, students, academics, and parents.

He assured that the Ministry, along with stakeholders such as the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), would ensure the new structure takes effect in the 2025/2026 academic session, starting in September.
