Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has issued a sobering warning to Nigerians about the real cost of free speech, especially in the age of social media.
In a candid statement shared online, the outspoken senator emphasized that while freedom of expression is a constitutional right, defending it in court often comes with a heavy financial burden.
“Freedom of Speech is NOT free,” he said. “Always keep some money to pay your lawyer in case you are sued over what you say or posted on your social media account.”
Sani further explained that even lawyers offering pro bono services often require funds to cover transportation, lunch, and other logistics. “And if you fall into the hands of a SAN, you are on your own,” he warned, referring to the steep legal fees charged by Senior Advocates of Nigeria.
The senator, known for his fearless commentary, noted that he himself has faced multiple legal battles due to his public opinions and understands the financial strain it places on individuals.
He concluded by advising Nigerians to ensure they have at least one trusted lawyer among their close friends, as legal protection is becoming an increasing necessity in today’s climate.
