The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has pledged to implement extensive reforms in the transport sector as part of enhanced security measures within the FCT.
Wike made the remarks on Friday during an inspection of ongoing construction projects, including bus terminals in Kugbo, Mabushi, and the Central Business District, as well as roadworks leading to Giri District.
He lamented the current state of Abuja’s public transport system, describing it as a national embarrassment.
The minister emphasised his commitment to reducing roadside motor parks and instructed local contractors to design terminals that accommodate both buses and taxis.
It is unfortunate that, for a country like ours and a federal capital territory at that, we cannot boast of a proper transportation system. Whenever we travel abroad, we observe how transport is managed elsewhere, and we should be able to replicate that here.
“Clearly, significant changes will take place in the transport sector; many reforms are underway. In fact, the committee is actively working on these reforms, and before the commissioning, we will unveil them. As part of security measures, we must know those involved in the taxi business, including vehicle colours, so that if any incident occurs, identification is straightforward.
Rest assured, we are doing everything possible. This time, we aim to eliminate excessive roadside parks. That is why I instructed the contractor that the terminals should cater for both buses and taxis, not just buses. Passengers arriving at the terminals will be able to board taxis to their destinations,” he explained.
