Former Senate President and Chairman of the PDP National Reconciliation and Strategy Committee, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has commended the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for demonstrating rare unity and maturity during the party’s historic 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held this evening in Abuja.
Saraki described the meeting as a “symbolic gathering” that could have either marked the collapse of party unity or the rebirth of renewed commitment. “Our esteemed leaders chose the latter,” he said in a statement released shortly after the session.
“Today, there was no victor and no vanquished. The winner today is the PDP. Another winner is Nigeria’s democracy because, without a vibrant opposition, democracy dies,” Saraki stated.
The high-stakes meeting came after 48 hours of internal tensions and uncertainty within the party. However, stakeholders from across the federation came together to jettison their differences, rebuild broken trust, and commit to peace and progress.
Saraki noted that millions of PDP members and supporters across all 774 local government areas are also beneficiaries of this renewed sense of unity, which he described as vital for national democracy.
He expressed personal satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting two key reasons: a collective agreement on party unity, and a spirit of compromise during frank discussions.
“The spirit of give and take dominated our frank discussions,” he said. “We have to live up to the expectations of our people as the only alternative capable of providing good leadership to Nigeria.”
Saraki, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum’s National Reconciliation and Strategy Committee, thanked leaders who made sacrifices by shifting positions to prioritize peace and stability in the party. He noted that today’s progress should not be seen as an end, but a foundation for more work ahead—including the upcoming NEC meeting on July 23rd and preparations for a hitch-free National Convention.
He emphasized that the party’s ability to disappoint pessimists and overcome internal propaganda shows PDP’s resilience and readiness to lead again.
“We have disproved the false narrative that some of us remaining in PDP are plotting its downfall. What we witnessed today proves otherwise,” Saraki declared.
