Anambra South Senatorial District is bracing for a new political wave as Chief Onyemelukwe Eusebius Zonyelu, a renowned financial expert and Action Peoples Party (APP) senatorial candidate, declared his vision for transformation ahead of the August 16, 2025, senatorial by-election.
In a series of passionate press briefings, Chief Zonyelu has positioned himself as the voice of the poor, the forgotten, and the marginalized in Anambra South. His campaign is centered around good governance, youth empowerment, justice, equity, and fairness — values he says have guided his personal and professional life.
A Poor Man Fighting for the Poor
Drawing inspiration from late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s 1979 quote that the poor must fight for themselves, Zonyelu emphasized that his candidacy is a direct response to the suffering of the common man.
“I am coming out not as a rich man, but as a poor man, to fight for the poor people of Anambra South Senatorial District,” he stated.
He also cited Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, stressing the need for those from socio-economically deprived backgrounds to rise and break the chains of oppression.
Security, Justice & Economic Development
Chief Zonyelu vowed to champion the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu if elected, while condemning criminal elements using Kanu’s name to perpetrate violence in the region. He pledged to work towards ending the devastating Monday sit-at-home protests, citing their destructive impact on the economy of Anambra South and the entire Southeast.
He also promised to help displaced communities rebuild and return to their ancestral homes, offering hope to victims of insecurity.
Agricultural Revolution Against Hunger
To tackle hunger and unemployment, Zonyelu revealed plans to install garri and palm oil processing machines in all seven local government areas of the senatorial district.
“With this, our people will embrace commercial agriculture, and hunger will reduce drastically,” he assured.
Continuing Uba’s Legacy & Boosting Healthcare
The APP candidate pledged to continue the legacy of the late Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Patrick Uba, acknowledging his impact on local communities. He specifically promised to equip the General Hospital at Ula Ekwulobia with modern medical facilities.
National Unity and Condemnation of Genocide
Zonyelu called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to end what he described as the “silent genocide” in parts of Nigeria. Quoting the Qur’an (Surah Al-Maidah 5:32), he emphasized the sanctity of human life and praised President Tinubu’s past activism in NADECO, urging him to fix the nation he once fought to liberate.
He also thanked the president for “developmental strides in the East” and pledged to support his son, Seyi Tinubu, in Lagos State politics come 2027.
Commendation for Governor Soludo
In a rare bipartisan move, Chief Zonyelu lauded Governor Charles Soludo for his transformational work in Anambra South. He cited the Ekwulobia Flyover, road projects, and efforts to combat negative spiritual practices like ritual killings and body part harvesting.
“Soludo is a living genius — Ezeoluatu egwu,” Zonyelu proclaimed.
A Call for Unity and Collective Action
Finally, Chief Zonyelu appealed to both the rich and poor, as well as unsuccessful aspirants from all political parties, to unite behind his candidacy. He promised an era of inclusive governance, where no one will be left behind.
“Together, we will bring justice, equity, development, and hope back to Anambra South. This is our time. God bless you all,” he concluded.
The APP candidate’s bold agenda is already stirring conversations across the district, as voters prepare to head to the polls in what could be a defining moment for the region’s political future.
