In a landmark recognition of exceptional service to medicine and healthcare, Dr. Pedus C. Eweama has been conferred with the prestigious National Diaspora Merit Award during the 2025 Nigeria Diaspora Day Celebration, held in Abuja.
Dr. Eweama, a Nigerian-born medical professional based in Australia, made history as the first indigene of Imo State and the first Nigerian resident in Australia to receive the honour in the healthcare category. The award, conferred by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), acknowledges his outstanding contributions to medical practice and his long-standing efforts to mobilise Nigerians in the diaspora toward meaningful investment and involvement in national development.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Dr. Eweama described the recognition as a “great honour and privilege,” noting that it represents a reward for his decade-long dedication to uniting and galvanising diaspora Nigerians for national service.
“This recognition is, no doubt, a reward for my years of galvanising Nigerians in the diaspora to not just think of home but to consider investing their time and resources in our ancestral homeland,” he stated.
Dr. Eweama highlighted how his leadership roles in various diaspora organisations have significantly shaped his personal and professional journey. He pledged to redouble his efforts in advancing diaspora engagement and national participation in healthcare and beyond.
He expressed gratitude to his family, friends, and professional allies for their unwavering support over the years, and reserved special appreciation for Hon. (Dr.) Abike Dabiri-Erewa, OON, Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM, praising her tireless advocacy for Nigerians abroad.
“The success of the Nigeria Diaspora Day Celebration and the National Diaspora Merit Award segment underscores Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa’s commitment to the diaspora space and her willingness to explore the resources and potentials that lie outside Nigeria for the benefit of our national developmental trajectory,” Dr. Eweama said.
