UNN SUG President, Others Suspended Over Alleged Cultism, Threat to Life, and N124m Financial Scandal

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Students’ Union Government (SUG) has plunged into crisis as the House of Representatives of the Union announced the indefinite suspension of the SUG President, Comr. Ozoagu Chinedu Godswill, and several other union members over grave allegations of cultism, gross misconduct, threat to life, and large-scale financial mismanagement.

The suspension, which was contained in an official memorandum dated September 15, 2025, and signed by the Speaker of the SUG House, Rt. Hon. Eze Ikechukwu Peter, followed a petition submitted by one Mr. Okeke Christian. The petition accused the embattled President of allegedly harboring and enabling the activities of cultists and “big boys” on campus for monetary benefits. These individuals have been linked to the tragic murder of a UNN student.

Key Allegations

  1. Cultism and Threat to Life:
    • The House alleged that the suspended President used cult groups to intimidate and threaten the lives of key union officials, including the Speaker, Clerk, and Budget Committee Chairman.
    • Evidence cited included recorded phone conversations where threats were issued to eliminate the Speaker for resisting corruption.
  2. Financial Impropriety:
    • The House revealed that the sum of ₦124 million, approved by the former Acting Vice-Chancellor (since removed by the Federal Government) for SUG projects, was withdrawn but diverted among external actors and SUG officials without any project execution.
    • An additional ₦100 million, reportedly withdrawn from the SUG account in the past year, also remains unaccounted for.

Leadership Transition

Following the suspension, the House directed the SUG Vice President to assume office as Acting President. However, if she declines the role due to her personal relationship with the suspended President, the House announced it will invoke the Principle of Necessity, authorizing the Union Secretary-General to step in as Acting SUG President.

The suspended President has been ordered to hand over all official materials, assets, and documents of the Union to the Acting Vice President without delay.

Speaker’s Stand

In a strongly worded statement, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Eze Ikechukwu Peter, vowed that the leadership of the House will not bow to intimidation, inducements, or threats.

“This struggle is not merely about individuals or offices, but about the soul of our Union. The days of sharing students’ money among political cabals and external mercenaries are over,” he declared.

Copies of the suspension notice have been forwarded to:

  • The Vice-Chancellor, UNN
  • Dean, Student Affairs Division
