Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has stepped in to address the grievances of 67 security guards at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (Lautech) Hospital after they emotionally appealed to him during an event at the facility.
One of the guards, handed a microphone, recounted their struggles, recalling a protest staged as far back as June 2021 without any resolution.
“On the 1st of June, 2021, we raised placards, asking you to help us. We’ve been here before Otunba Alao Akala and before the work of this place is completed. We are not staff but indigenes of Oyo State, please help us, we are suffering. I have a family and three children; my age is fast running out. Please help us, your excellency,” the guard said tearfully.
Governor Makinde then asked how much they earned. One officer replied, “N18,800.” A hospital representative clarified that the guards were not direct employees but outsourced personnel, with the firm responsible for them receiving N27,000 per worker.
Reacting to the revelation, Governor Makinde announced: “I can solve the problem right away by saying that all 67 should be converted directly to ad-hoc workers and you will get N80,000 every month from the first of October.”
The governor’s declaration was greeted with cheers and jubilation, as his decision instantly more than quadrupled the workers’ wages.
