Chief Onyemelukwe Eusebius Zonyelu, former senatorial candidate of the Action Peoples Party (APP) in the just concluded Anambra South Senatorial by-election, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to unconditionally release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Onyemelukwe, a financial expert from Igboukwu, described Kanu as a freedom fighter whose struggles are geared towards improving the living standards of Nigerians and the black race globally.
According to him, Kanu’s advocacy is anchored on the belief that with the abundance of mineral resources God has blessed Nigeria with, the country should rank among the best in the world and serve as “heaven on earth” for its citizens.
“Keeping Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in detention is not proper. He is a freedom fighter like Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malala Yousafzai—unique individuals sent by God to liberate their people,” Onyemelukwe stated.
He further called on advocates of justice, equity, good governance, and fairness across Nigeria and the international community to join his plea for Kanu’s release.
Reminding President Tinubu of his role during the pro-democracy struggles under NADECO, Onyemelukwe urged him to replicate the same spirit of justice and fairness by granting Kanu his freedom.
“God helped you during the NADECO era and preserved you to become president today to solve the problems of Nigerians. History will remember you as an advocate of unity, justice, equity, and fairness if you release Nnamdi Kanu,” Onyemelukwe said.
While praising the Tinubu administration’s efforts in infrastructure, social amenities, and poverty alleviation, he insisted that the unconditional release of Kanu would further cement the president’s legacy both at home and in the diaspora.
“Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria, long live President Ahmed Tinubu, and long live all freedom fighters across the world,” he concluded.
