Politics in Abia State is once again heating up, and not surprisingly, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has found himself at the center of controversy. His recent comments attacking Governor Alex Otti’s performance have raised eyebrows across the state and beyond. But to many Ndi Abia, Kalu’s sudden criticism appears less about public service and more about political ambition ahead of 2027.
Let’s be clear Alex Otti is not perfect, but since assuming office, he has proven to be one of the most visionary and result-oriented governors in Abia’s history. From massive infrastructural renewal to restoring confidence in governance, Otti’s administration has demonstrated what purposeful leadership looks like. His reforms in civil service, road construction, healthcare, and education have set Abia on a new course toward genuine development.
So when Benjamin Kalu, a man who has been in the National Assembly for years with little to show at home, suddenly begins to criticize a performing governor, one must ask: What exactly has he done for Ndi Abia as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives?
Kalu’s office is powerful and well-resourced. Yet, Abians are still waiting to see the transformative federal projects, employment opportunities, or impactful legislation he has attracted to the state. Instead of using his position to strengthen Abia’s development, he seems more interested in attacking the man who is actually delivering results.
The truth is simple Governor Alex Otti has restored hope in governance. He came at a time when Abia was drowning in debt, decay, and disappointment. Within a short time, he has rebuilt roads long abandoned, revived the state workforce, and brought transparency to government finances. His leadership has become a model for other South-East states.
It is laughable for anyone to compare Otti’s record to that of past governors who left the state in ruins. Those who governed before him had more than two decades to fix Abia but left it impoverished and broken. Otti, in contrast, is rebuilding from the ashes.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu should put politics aside and join hands to support the transformation happening in Abia State. 2027 is still far away Ndi Abia are not looking for another political promise; they are looking for results, and Otti is delivering them.
Rather than trying to deceive Abians with empty criticisms, Benjamin Kalu should first present his scorecard. What has he done with his influence as Deputy Speaker? How has his leadership improved the lives of his constituents in Bende or across Abia North?
Alex Otti is a God-sent leader to Ndi Abia and indeed the South East. His focus, discipline, and people-centered governance have rekindled faith in democracy. He deserves the support of all well-meaning Abians to complete the good work he has started.
Abia is finally on the path to greatness. Those planning to disrupt that progress for selfish political gain should step aside. Let Governor Alex Otti finish his mission a mission of restoration, renewal, and redemption.
