The Kwara State Government has dismissed as false reports circulating on social media that nine local government areas in the state are under siege by bandits, describing the claims as “reckless, misleading, and politically motivated.”

In a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, the government said no part of Kwara State is currently under the control or siege of bandits, contrary to reports being circulated online.

“We wish to alert the public to some reckless claims that nine local government areas of Kwara State are under siege by the bandits. This is totally false. No local government area is under siege in the state,” the statement read.

Olukoju described the viral reports as the handiwork of “opposition elements” bent on causing unnecessary panic and discrediting the government.

“The unfortunate challenges we have had in a few areas do not warrant the wicked escalation and fake news which are being promoted by opposition elements in and outside of the state,” she said, adding that such actions amount to aiding the psychological operations of criminal elements.

The commissioner also expressed disappointment over the alleged involvement of former presidential candidate Peter Obi, accusing him of amplifying the false report through his social media accounts.

“We regretfully observe that Mr. Peter Obi has lent his social media handles to spreading such fake news. This is not expected from him as a statesman. We request Mr. Peter Obi to bring down the post as it is totally false and inappropriate,” Olukoju stated.

She urged the public to verify all information before sharing, noting that the spread of unverified reports undermines the efforts of security agencies working to keep the state safe.

“This irresponsible behaviour is making things harder for the security forces who already have enough on their plates,” she added.

The Kwara government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state, emphasizing that residents should go about their lawful activities without fear.
