Senate Seeks Permanent Military Base in Kwara South Over Rising Insecurity

Senate

The Nigerian Senate has called for the establishment of a permanent military base in Kwara South to serve as a rapid-response hub, urging the deployment of additional troops and Special Forces to comb the forests and restore normalcy.

This follows a motion of urgent national importance presented during Wednesday’s plenary by Senator Ashiru Oyelola, representing Kwara South, highlighting the worsening security crisis in the region.

Akelicious reports that Senator Oyelola noted that the Kwara South Senatorial District is under siege. Communities across Ifelodun, Isin, Ekiti, and Oke Ero Local Government Areas are reeling from a wave of deadly bandit attacks, kidnappings, and assassinations that have displaced thousands and left dozens dead.

Other lawmakers in their contributions, expressed concern over the rising insecurity even in their constituency despite efforts by security agencies, calling for more efforts in tackling the menace.

The Senate has ordered a security assessment in Kwara South and summoned key security chiefs for briefings. It called on NEMA to provide urgent aid to displaced residents and demanded compensation for families of fallen vigilantes. Lawmakers observed a minute of silence to honor those killed in the attacks.
