The Nigeria Police Force has warned all intending protesters and counter-protest groups to strictly comply with the subsisting order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which restrains any form of protest within and around key national institutions and strategic areas of the Federal Capital Territory.

The court order, delivered on October 17, 2025, by Justice M.G. Umar in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2202/2025 Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Omoyele Sowore & 4 others prohibits protests within and around Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly Complex, Force Headquarters, the Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the rule of law while ensuring peace, security, and public order across the country.

Hundeyin stated that the directive was in line with the constitutional duty of the Police to enforce law and order and to respect the authority of the court. He cautioned all groups — whether in support of or opposed to the ongoing agitation for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu — to adhere strictly to the provisions of the court order.

“The Nigeria Police Force recognises and respects the rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and expression. However, such rights must be exercised responsibly and within the limits of the law, particularly where public safety, national security, and the rights of other citizens are concerned,” the statement read.

The Police further warned that any person or group that attempts to hijack protests to incite violence, vandalise property, or engage in acts capable of threatening public peace will face decisive legal consequences.

“Those who use protests as cover to incite violence, carry offensive weapons, or engage in acts likely to cause loss of life or injury will be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted under relevant criminal laws,” Hundeyin added.

He also cautioned individuals using social media to incite violence or mobilise unlawful gatherings, noting that digital evidence would be used in investigations and prosecutions.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has directed the FCT Commissioner of Police and all operational commanders to enforce the court’s order and ensure visible deployments around sensitive areas to prevent any breach of the peace.

The Force urged residents of the FCT and other parts of the country to go about their lawful activities without fear, assuring that adequate security measures have been put in place to safeguard lives and property.
