In a heartfelt appeal addressed to the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara (GSSRS), a community leader from Ancient Nkoro (Kirika Kingdom), Dstg. Comr. Williams Ibinabo, has called for urgent government intervention to address the escalating threats of flooding and erosion ravaging Nkoro communities in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area.
Comr. Ibinabo, in an open letter to the Governor, expressed profound gratitude to the Fubara-led administration for the recent revalidation and approval of the 4.8km reinforced concrete shoreline protection and reclamation project in Queens Town, Epellema–Iloma–Minima communities. He described the project as “a testament to the Governor’s commitment to infrastructure development and the well-being of Rivers people.”
However, he urged the Governor to extend similar intervention to Nkoro communities, which he said are “completely surrounded by water and facing severe threats from coastal erosion and persistent flooding.” According to him, the situation has led to “loss of livelihood, displacement, and destruction of properties,” putting the safety and survival of residents at risk.
“The situation is becoming increasingly dire, and I fear for the safety of our people,” the letter read. “I humbly appeal to Your Excellency to consider extending the shoreline protection project to Nkoro, to safeguard lives and properties and restore hope to our communities.”
Comr. Ibinabo further commended Governor Fubara for his administration’s strides in infrastructure, agriculture, education, and healthcare, as well as for recognizing the Nkoro people in governance — citing the appointment of an Nkoro son as the Executive Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area.
He concluded by expressing optimism that Governor Fubara’s administration would heed the community’s cry and deliver the much-needed shoreline protection and sandfilling project to Nkoro.
“This project would not only save lives and properties but also provide a sense of security and stability for our communities,” he affirmed.
