The Anglican Bishop of Ogbaru Diocese, Prosper Amah, has called on the Chief of Naval Staff to investigate the alleged assault of Anglican priest Tochukwu Agina by a naval officer at a checkpoint in Okpotouno, Ogbaru Local Government Area, Anambra State.
In a letter dated December 2, the bishop said the incident occurred on Sunday, November 30, 2025, around 5:00 p.m., when the priest was reportedly attacked after being falsely accused of using a phone at the checkpoint. Eyewitnesses and the priest’s account confirmed he was not using a phone at the time.
Although the priest received first aid at the naval clinic, Amah condemned the officer’s actions as an abuse of authority and a breach of the Nigerian Navy’s code of conduct and fundamental human rights.
He urged a thorough, transparent, and independent investigation, disciplinary action against the officer, official reassurance to the affected family and community, enhanced training for naval personnel on civilian relations, and adequate compensation for the clergyman.
The bishop stressed that while Nigerians continue to hold the Armed Forces in high regard, accountability and justice are crucial to maintaining public trust.
