The Ebem Ohafia community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State has announced a sweeping ban on hard drugs, cultism, gun violence, and other criminal activities as part of efforts to restore peace and security in the area.
The decision was jointly taken by Ebem Ohafia youths in collaboration with the Central Executive Council of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), with the full backing of the Ebem Council of Chiefs and Elders.
According to a statement signed by the community’s Publicity Secretary, Ifeanyi Okali, and dated January 13, 2026, the sale, use, and trafficking of hard drugs and illicit substances have been prohibited with immediate effect. The community warned that anyone found guilty would face stiff fines and disciplinary actions, regardless of status or affiliation.
The statement also issued a final warning on cultism, directing all individuals involved in such activities to renounce them immediately or face severe community sanctions and possible prosecution.
In addition, criminal elements using Ebem Ohafia as a hideout have been ordered to leave the community without delay. The community further warned that any indigene found harbouring criminals would be held accountable.
The new directives also prohibit fighting with weapons, brandishing of firearms, and the discharge of gunshots within the community. Offenders, the statement said, would be handed over to security agencies, fined heavily, and subjected to additional community sanctions.
The community resolved that Ndi Ikwu would be held responsible for defaulters within their respective jurisdictions, including possible suspension from hosting ceremonies where necessary.
Meanwhile, traders operating along the Ebem Police Station/Court Road and within the Ebem Daily Market have been warned against obstructing gutters, walkways, and designated free zones. Any violation, the community said, would lead to the immediate impoundment of goods.
Ebem Ohafia community leaders called on residents and visitors to comply fully with the new measures, stressing that enforcement would be strict and uncompromising as part of a broader effort to ensure lasting peace and order in the area.
