Deadly Clash Between ISWAP and Bukura Faction Rocks Abadam, Dozens Killed

Dozens of fighters were reportedly killed on Tuesday after a renewed violent clash between the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and a Boko Haram splinter group, the Bukura faction loyal to Abu Umaima, along the Lake Chad Basin axis of Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State.

Security sources told Akelicious that the fighting erupted around 6:00 a.m. and lasted until about 10:15 a.m. near Dogon Chiku Buhari village, a border community in Abadam LGA, barely one kilometre from the Nigeria–Niger Republic boundary.

According to the sources, fighters of the Bukura faction, believed to be operating from settlements on the Niger Republic side of the Lake Chad Basin, crossed into Nigerian territory and engaged ISWAP elements stationed around the area.

“The clash occurred around Dogon Chiku Buhari village, east of Tubum Mota and along the Bosso–Diffa axis in Niger Republic. The fighting lasted for several hours, with heavy casualties recorded on both sides,” one of the sources disclosed.

Tubum Mota village, located east of Malam Fatori and about 19 kilometres from the town, has remained a known flashpoint for violent confrontations between rival extremist groups operating in the Lake Chad Basin.

The latest confrontation is linked to longstanding rivalries within the jihadist landscape of the region. ISWAP has continued efforts to consolidate control across the basin by absorbing or eliminating rival factions, while the Bukura faction loyal to Abu Umaima has resisted subordination, leveraging cross-border movement and local alliances for survival.

Security experts note that the porous Nigeria–Niger border enables armed groups to relocate quickly between countries, further complicating counterterrorism operations by Nigerian security forces and the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).
