Nigeria, U.S. Hold 3rd Meeting On Religious Freedom, Civilian Protection

Nigeria and the United State, U.S., in Abuja, held third high-level meeting on religious freedom and citizens’ protection, since November 2025.

The meeting of the Nigeria-U.S. Joint Working Group provided the plank to enhance bilateral relations between Nigeria and the U.S., and consolidate collaboration in the drive to eradicate terrorism and security challenges in Nigeria.

The meeting was held in the Office of the National Security Adviser, co-chaired by NSA Nuhu Ribadu and U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker.

The participants deliberated on Nigeria’s status as a Country of Particular Concern on religious freedom.

The Information Minister, Mohammed Idris, highlighted that Nigeria derived operational gains from U.S. intelligence sharing, bolstering operations like Hadin Kai in the Northeast and Fasan Yamma.

Idris disclosed the U.S. commitments for timely delivery of drones, helicopters, spare parts, and surplus defense equipment.

The minister observed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had declared national security emergencies in vulnerable areas, authorised intensified joint operations and ordered the sustained deployment of security forces to priority locations.

The minister assured of reforms for a safer Nigeria.

Nigerian officials present at the meeting include Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd); Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; Budget and Economic Planning Minister, Abubakar Bagudu; Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; Interior Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; and the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi.
