A 23-year-old Indian woman, Tannu Singh, has allegedly died by suicide after reportedly being emotionally hurt by a derogatory remark made by her husband in the presence of her sister.

The tragic incident occurred last Wednesday at the couple’s residence in Indiranagar’s Takrohi area, according to a report by The Times of India.

Police sources said the incident followed a moment of light-hearted banter at home involving Tannu, her husband Rahul Srivastava, her sister Anjali, and their son, Abhay. During the exchange, Rahul, allegedly joined by Anjali, reportedly mocked Tannu and referred to her as a “monkey,” a comment said to have deeply distressed her.

Following the remark, Tannu reportedly left the room without speaking. Rahul later stepped out to get food. On returning, he asked Anjali to check on her sister. When Anjali went to the room and found the door locked with no response, she peeped through a window and allegedly saw Tannu hanging from the ceiling.

Anjali raised an alarm, prompting Rahul and neighbours to rush to the scene. Tannu was brought down and rushed to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.

A post-mortem examination confirmed hanging as the cause of death.

Tannu and Rahul had been married for about four years after a love relationship. Rahul works as an auto-rickshaw driver, while Tannu was reportedly learning modelling. The couple lived together in Indiranagar.

Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
