End Extortion, Respect Human Rights, Follow Tinubu’s Directive – Deji Adeyanju Tells New IGP

Activist and pro-democracy campaigner, Deji Adeyanju, has congratulated the newly appointed top police official and called on him to tackle longstanding issues within the Nigerian Police Force.

In a statement shared publicly, Adeyanju described the appointment as a “rare opportunity to right all the wrongs and evil the Nigerian police are known for.” He urged the officer, whom he referred to as “Egbon,” to ensure compliance with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to withdraw police officers from VIP protection duties so they can focus on national security.

Adeyanju also called for reforms to end extortion practices, protect human rights, and restore public trust in the police. “If you don’t do the right thing, there’s no friend in the jungle; we will start fighting,” he warned, emphasizing the importance of decisive action to leave a lasting positive impact.

The activist’s comments come shortly after the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the subsequent appointment of his successor. Adeyanju’s message resonates with ongoing calls from civil society for accountability and meaningful reform in Nigeria’s security architecture.
