Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised fresh concerns over the worsening security situation across Nigeria, warning that the country is “under siege” as violent attacks continue to spread across several states.
In a statement, Obi said the scale of insecurity had become unbearable, citing multiple incidents of attacks, kidnappings, and killings reported across different parts of the country within the past week.
He referenced an attack in the Ngoshe community in Borno State, where terrorists reportedly overpowered soldiers, killing both security personnel and civilians, while abducting more than 100 women and children.
The former presidential candidate also highlighted the plight of residents in Nasarawa State, Kogi State, and Benue State, where communities have reportedly been forced to flee their homes due to attacks by armed groups. He noted that in Nasarawa’s Kadarko area alone, over 14,000 civilians have been registered as internally displaced persons.
Obi further pointed to other recent incidents, including the reported abduction of travellers along the Kishi-Igbeti road in Oyo State, attacks and kidnappings in Ondo State, and deadly assaults in Kebbi State that have claimed the lives of both civilians and security personnel.
He also expressed concern over insecurity reaching the nation’s capital, citing a recent incident in Kubwa, Abuja, where several residents, including women and children, were reportedly abducted from their homes.
According to Obi, the continued attacks highlight the urgent need for decisive leadership and stronger security responses. He stressed that the primary responsibility of any government is to protect lives and property, urging authorities to prioritise the safety and welfare of citizens.
“These are not just news items,” he said, adding that Nigerians deserve leadership that restores security, dignity, and hope across the country.
Obi concluded by reiterating his belief that “a new Nigeria is possible.”
