Scores of people are feared dead after multiple explosions rocked Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Monday evening, March 16, 2026.
The blasts reportedly began around 7:20 p.m. local time, striking several locations across the city, including Monday Market, Kaleri, the Post Office area, and near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) gate.
Many people were injured in the explosions and have been rushed to hospitals for treatment.
At one of the blast sites, the body of a suspected suicide bomber was reportedly recovered as security agencies began investigations.
Police sources say the attacks are suspected to have been carried out by terrorists linked to Boko Haram or Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), possibly using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and suicide bombers, a pattern consistent with previous insurgent attacks in the region.
Security has been heightened across Maiduguri as authorities move to secure affected areas and determine the full scale of casualties and damage.
More details are expected as investigations continue.
