UNILAG Ends 10 Year SUG Ban, Inaugurates New President

UNILAG Ends 10 Year SUG Ban,

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has lifted the 10 year suspension on its Students’ Union Government (SUG), restoring student leadership on campus.

The union was banned in 2016 following protests over welfare issues and unrest. After a decade without an elected student body, the university conducted fresh elections, leading to the emergence of Bolaji Akinpelu of the Faculty of Arts as SUG President, the first in 10 years.

At the inauguration, the university described the move as a return to responsible unionism and pledged support for the new leadership.

The development has been widely welcomed as a step toward restoring student representation, though expectations remain high for the new SUG to maintain stability and effectively advocate for students.
