FG Raises Gas Price — Nigerians Brace for Higher Electricity Tariffs, Living Costs

FG Raises Gas Price

The Federal Government has approved an increase in the domestic price of natural gas, a move that could trigger higher electricity tariffs and rising cost of living nationwide.

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) raised the gas price to $2.18 per MMBtu, up from $2.13, with the new rate set to take effect from April 1, 2026.

Commercial users will also pay more, as prices increase to $2.68 per MMBtu, a development expected to impact manufacturers and businesses.

Experts warn that since gas is the primary fuel for power generation in Nigeria, the hike could lead to increased electricity tariffs, with distribution companies likely passing additional costs on to consumers.

The adjustment, though relatively small, comes at a time when Nigerians are already grappling with inflation and rising energy costs, raising concerns about further pressure on households and businesses.
