The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked claims that its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, operates or endorsed any post on X, describing the allegation as false and malicious.

In a statement released by the Commission, INEC clarified that the Chairman does not own or manage any personal account on the platform and has never engaged in partisan commentary or political activity in any capacity.

The Commission stated that the viral post was a deliberate attempt to undermine the integrity and neutrality of its leadership, especially at a time when it is focused on key electoral reforms and preparations for upcoming elections.

INEC also raised concerns over the increasing use of fake social media accounts bearing the Chairman’s name by cybercriminals to mislead and defraud Nigerians.

It noted that several such accounts have previously been identified and reported to security agencies.

The Commission assured the public that it is working closely with relevant authorities to track and prosecute those behind the misinformation and identity theft, warning that such acts violate provisions of the Cybercrimes Act.

INEC urged Nigerians to disregard the false claims and rely only on verified institutional channels for accurate information, reaffirming its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections.
