PRP Backs ADC, Warns Against State Interference Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has thrown its full weight behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC), raising alarm over what it describes as interference by critical state institutions in the affairs of opposition parties.

Addressing the press, PRP National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed said the party’s leadership visited the ADC to express solidarity following recent developments, which he described as troubling and potentially harmful to Nigeria’s democratic process.

He stated that PRP, founded on principles of justice, fairness, and democratic integrity, would stand by any political party facing what he called “unjustified, unverified, or partisan assaults” capable of crippling democracy.

“This is a multi-party democracy. It must operate as such. We want free and fair elections in 2027, and that cannot happen if critical institutions of the state interfere in the affairs of political parties,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed warned that actions perceived as politically motivated interference could undermine confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections. He insisted that any allegations against political parties must be handled strictly within the bounds of the law, with transparency and fairness.

“If ADC has infringed the law, let it be treated accordingly. But political parties must not be subjected to interference outside legal boundaries. We will not tolerate it. We will resist it,” he declared.

He further called on other opposition parties to unite in defending democratic principles, stressing that the issue goes beyond ADC alone.

“We believe other parties should join us. What is happening is wrong, and we will continue to support ADC and any party facing similar challenges,” he added.

The PRP chairman also issued a direct caution to both the electoral body and the judiciary, emphasizing the need for neutrality and independence in their roles.

“Our judiciary is on test. It must not even appear to operate in the interest of the state. Democracy must be protected, not weakened,” he said.

Reaffirming commitment to Nigeria’s democratic future, Baba-Ahmed stated that the party would continue to push back against any form of suppression or restriction that threatens free political participation.

“A democracy that serves only one party is not a democracy. Nigerians must have a credible 2027 election if democracy is to survive,” he concluded.
